11/9/2023 0 Comments Ruins of rust belt![]() None of the cars I actually cared for had any significant rust beyond the surface stuff, meanwhile all the ones I didn't care about absolutely disintegrated from rust. I've had a variety of cars - some I loved and babied, others I rarely even washed - but all were driven 12 months a year in snow and salt. I've driven a lifetime in the rust belt and regular strategic washing is the most important thing. Its the 10-20 year mark where things go to shit if nothings done. CR also assumes everyone gets a new car every 5-7 years and most cars you can own it and never wash it it would still be fine. That was inside frame, entire underside, inside rockers, cab corners, all doors, around the inside of front and rear fenders, inside tailgate and front hood lip. Cost me $475 to have my silverado crew cab done. ![]() ![]() Go to a shop that makes thier income by doing it right. Its just a guy spraying shit randomly for entirely too much money. It gets blown inside the framerails, onside cross supports, up inside fenders, inside cab corners and rocker pannels.Īs per your links, yes never get the dealer undercoating. You really need to examine the underside of a salt crusted vehicle more, that salt mist gets absolutely everywhere. Noones frame swapping a 20 year old truck when the body is likely rusted out too. Trucks and things with legit frames once they start to go its done. Usually by the time things get bad the car isnt worth repairing even tho it still runs fine. Subframes are replaceable yes but the mounts where it attaches to the body arent. Yes the ziebart tar stuff sucks ass and does more damage than its trying to prevent. Cars and especially trucks that have yearly oil or wax based undercoating applied arent anywhere near the level of rust ones that aren't. is this true, and if so how often should I do that? or do you have to apply some special spray to the bottom of the car every year or something?Īnd ive got a lifetime of living in the salt belt. like you just have to wash the salt off of the bottom of the car somehow (maybe with one of those touchless car washes). Logically, preventing rust seems stupidly easy then. so, for my next car, i’m going to make sure it’s rust free and do everything i can to make sure it doesn’t become a problem.Īs far as i understand, at least under the car, there is meant to be a thin layer of surface rust that forms early on and protects any possible corrosion from getting deep in the metal and causing issues, but the salt from the roads where i live is too strong and just rots the entire thing. this car has been absolutely decimated by rust. but sadly I do have to get rid of it soon because at this point it’s almost finished returning to the earth: the frame has been reduced to swiss cheese, there’s a hole in the gas tank that prevents me from putting any more than 7 gallons in it, the brake lines almost tried to kill me, i mean the list goes on. i mean, for a broke person car I couldn’t ask for better, i love how powerful and solid it feels.
